The number of students in our Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program has drastically increased since 2019. Victoria ISD has increased the number of students in the AVID elective through recruitment, servicing 6th graders as an elective, servicing P-TECH students with AVID/Grit, and with the addition of Torres Elementary being an AVID campus.

During the 2019-20 school year we had 487 students in the AVID program. Currently, the program has 1,879 students.

AVID at the secondary campus level is an elective class that prepares students with academic potential for success in college. AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

“AVID is a course that empowers students to strive for academic excellence,” said Elise Tate, Director of Advanced Academics in VISD. “It challenges students to do better and helps to build student confidence in all areas of life. With AVID, any dream is possible.”

VISD is proud to offer AVID at secondary campuses across our district. The program is offered to 6-12th graders in VISD at Cade Middle School, Howell Middle School, Patti Welder Middle School, Stroman Middle School, STEM Middle School, Victoria East and Victoria West High School.

Torres Elementary School is an AVID elementary campus where all Torres students participate in the program that consists of teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking at a young age. Children learn about organization, study skills, communication, and self-advocacy. AVID Elementary students take structured notes and answer and ask high-level questions that go beyond routine answers.
